PanSTARRS Expedition - March 15th, 2013, Oetztal - Austria
Shortfilm of the Austrian TWANight.org PanSTARRS Expedition - a night with -25 degree celsius and gusty winds up to 45 km/h at the 3050 m high Gaislachkogel Mountain, Oetztal, Austria. In cooperation with the Institute for Astro- and Particle Physics, University Innsbruck and the Austrian Weather Service (ZAMG.ac.at).
Until about March 28th, comet PanSTARRS will be visible above Austria in the northern hemisphere during dawn. Experts from Tyrol went up to the top of the 3055 m high "Gaislachkogel", a mountain in the Ötztal, to take night shots of our cosmic neighbour.
Full story:
The current weather situation in Tyrol was not appropriate for observing comet PanSTARRS in the third week of March. Therefore, well-known astrophotographer and ESO.org/ALMA foto ambassador Christoph Malin, astrophysicist Wolfgang Kausch, and worldwide expedition weather expert and mountain guide Michael Winkler from austrian weather service ZAMG searched for a location with a good sight to the comet.
"We've investigated several mountains around Innsbruck in the Gschnitztal, Stubaital, and Ötztal, which seemed to be approppriate for the comet observations", said Wolfgang Kausch. "Michael Winkler created the weather forecast for these regions, and Christoph Malin the timetable for the observation itself".
The final choice was the Gaislachkogel, which provides a good view towards north and west. "From this mountain we expected a good sight to the horizon, although being very cold (minus 25 degree celsius) with gusty winds up to 45 km/h", said Kausch. "Extremely cold conditions like that can lead to dangerous freezing, so we had to be careful and well equipped", adds Winkler.
At 13:00 the final "GO" came from weather expert Michael Winkler, so the expedition had to hurry up to reach the top of the mountain.
“At around 7:05 p.m. EXIF Data, the frames of my D4 showed the first appearance of the comet. A little bit later we discovered the comet with 8 x 52 Vixen binoculars, and a couple minutes later were able to see it with naked eye”, said Malin.
Although the camera lenses were equipped with heaters against frost there remained technical challenges. Malin: “The Live view of our D7000 failed (test shots for prefocus necessary), and I had not seen LCD's of DSLRs stopping to respond since the last TWAN imaging expedition to the 5000 m high ALMA Chajnator plateau in 2011” (See also https://vimeo.com/33276404 and https://vimeo.com/36972668).
After several hundred shots of the starry night sky the expedition ended at 01:00 with a night downhill skiing trip. Malin: “What a view, what a great moment! I will never forget the sight of this cosmic neighbour sinking into the clouds at the horizon (that tried to grab it ;)”. Kausch added: "Thanks to teamwork and perfect planning, it was a great adventure. And Many thanks go to Ötztal tourism and 'Bergbahnen Sölden' for their great support."

Réunion Céleste
This slideshow of 35 pictures is the result of 18 months of night shooting realized on Réunion Island. These images show the diversity of landscapes of Réunion under the starry sky.
Most of these pictures were done in the area of the Piton de la Fournaise, volcano area free from light pollution.
The night sky is a unique show and this slideshow is here to attest: stunning Milky Way, planetary conjunctions, lunar eclipse, meteor, star trail, moonlight landscape. Each image is built so that the spectators feel the immensity of the universe and realize the fragility of their condition.
Astronomy is a great science because it opens the gates of dreams. One of the targets of this slideshow is to carry you in this dreamlike universe and no doubt that the "Moonlight Sonata" by Beethoven will guide you.
These 35 pictures of astro-photographic landscapes are currently the subject of an exhibition in the city of Saint-Denis in Réunion Island. They will be on display until 29 October 2011.

Occupy Wall Street
www.comprimido.pt
Occupy Wall Street is a people-powered movement that began on September 17, 2011 in Liberty Square in Manhattan’s Financial District, and has spread to over 100 cities in the United States and actions in over 1,500 cities globally. #ows is fighting back against the corrosive power of major banks and multinational corporations over the democratic process, and the role of Wall Street in creating an economic collapse that has caused the greatest recession in generations. The movement is inspired by popular uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia, and aims to expose how the richest 1% of people are writing the rules of an unfair global economy that is foreclosing on our future.
The occupations around the world are being organized using a non-binding consensus based collective decision making tool known as a "people's assembly". To learn more about how to use this process to organize your local community to fight back against social injustice, please read this quick guide on group dynamics in people's assemblies.

Hydraulic Fracturing FAQs
How does hydraulic fracturing work?
Hydraulic fracturing or fracking is a means of natural gas extraction employed in deep natural gas well drilling. Once a well is drilled, millions of gallons of water, sand and proprietary chemicals are injected, under high pressure, into a well. The pressure fractures the shale and props open fissures that enable natural gas to flow more freely out of the well.
What is horizontal hydraulic fracturing?
Horizontal hydrofracking is a means of tapping shale deposits containing natural gas that were previously inaccessible by conventional drilling. Vertical hydrofracking is used to extend the life of an existing well once its productivity starts to run out, sort of a last resort. Horizontal fracking differs in that it uses a mixture of 596 chemicals, many of them proprietary, and millions of gallons of water per frack. This water then becomes contaminated and must be cleaned and disposed of.
What is the Halliburton Loophole?
In 2005, the Bush/ Cheney Energy Bill exempted natural gas drilling from the Safe Drinking Water Act. It exempts companies from disclosing the chemicals used during hydraulic fracturing. Essentially, the provision took the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) off the job. It is now commonly referred to as the Halliburton Loophole.
What is the Safe Drinking Water Act?
In 1974, the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) was passed by Congress to ensure clean drinking water free from both natural and man-made contaminates.
What is the FRAC Act?
The FRAC Act (Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness to Chemical Act) is a House bill intended to repeal the Halliburton Loophole and to require the natural gas industry to disclose the chemicals they use.
How deep do natural gas wells go?
The average well is up to 8,000 feet deep. The depth of drinking water aquifers is about 1,000 feet. The problems typically stem from poor cement well casings that leak natural gas as well as fracking fluid into water wells.
How much water is used during the fracking process?
Generally 1-8 million gallons of water may be used to frack a well. A well may be fracked up to 18 times.
What fluids are used in the fracking process?
For each frack, 80-300 tons of chemicals may be used. Presently, the natural gas industry does not have to disclose the chemicals used, but scientists have identified volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene.
In what form does the natural gas come out of the well?
The gas comes up wet in produced water and has to be separated from the wastewater on the surface. Only 30-50% of the water is typically recovered from a well. This wastewater can be highly toxic.
What is done with the wastewater?
Evaporators evaporate off VOCs and condensate tanks steam off VOCs, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The wastewater is then trucked to water treatment facilities.
What is a well's potential to cause air pollution?
As the VOCs are evaporated and come into contact with diesel exhaust from trucks and generators at the well site, ground level ozone is produced. Ozone plumes can travel up to 250 miles.

TALKING TO GOD (HITBOD'DUT) complete (90 minutes)
Breslav Hassidim and Franciscan Catholics are told to talk to God in the woods. Gestalt Therapy provides us with many tools to help us get past our own ego trips and really speak to God. Part 1 of this project shows us "dumb hitbod'dut", all the wrong things to do, while parts 2-7 of this project attempt to demonstrate some of the right things to do to be more successful if and when you do talk to God.

PREFACE
(a) ON THE HYPOTHESIS OF THIS EXPERIMENT
The teachings of Rabbi Nachman of Breslav, as embodied in today's Breslav Hassidic sect of Judaism embody a form of what traditionally goes by the name of "Pietism". Pietism emphasizes faith and simplicity over against complex intellectual explanations of religious matters. But from the day that the Baal Shem Tov, it is said, sought God by talking to Him in the woods and jumping back and forth from one side of a stream to the other, until the day Nachman published his collected essays, "Likutei Moharan", much water in the stream of Jewish Pietism has passed under the bridge. That is to say, Likutei Moharan is not simple stuff. In order to write what he writes in those pages, Rabbi Nachman had to be well versed in the complex tradition of Pietist religion. Whether he got it from the original sources or from other compilations, he had to know something about the Neoplatonism of Philo, Ibn Gabirol, Judah Halevy , Abu-l-Barakat and Leone Ebreo. He had to know something about the responses of Hasdai Crescas to the Aristotelian Jewish tradition which crystallized in Maimonides "Guide For The Perplexed". To these two traditions, Nachman of Breslav added a strong emphasis upon the philosophy of language, in the sense that the Word of God is coming to us from a Jewish God who in a profound mystical sense is a speaking God, speaking to us and speaking through us. Though it is hard to find precedents to this in Judaism, we can find it in the work of the Christian theologian Johann Georg Hamann, which appeared, shortly before the time Nachman was born, in Konigsberg, East Prussia, not far from where Nachman lived in Eastern Europe. In the work of Hamann we find much of the philosophy of language which Nachman incorporated into his teachings. In other words, since the teachings of Rabbi Nachman of Breslav are so saturated with the complex tradition of Pietism, they are anything but a return to the naivete of the Bal Shem Tov. In this respect Nachman is deliberately deceptive when he tells his disciples again and again to keep it simple, and rely mainly on prayer.
But he also tells them to study! So he is not preaching mindlessness. Nor is he teaching blind following. His elevation of "the tsaddik of the generation" to the level of highest authority in the community of Hassidim is to be read both in the literal, "pshat", sense, and also in the profoundest philosophical sense as the Moses-Mashiach element potentially available in every person who submits himself to the theological process outlined in Likutei Moharan. Traditionally in Judaism it is said that each Jew shares in the living reality of Moses receiving the Torah on Mt. Sinai, but for Nachman this notion is merely the tip of an iceberg which is available to those who take the trouble to fathom the ideas of Likutei Moharan.
In view of these elements contained in Nachman's teachings, it should not be surprising that in what follows here I discover profundity rather than naivete in Nachman's advice to his disciples that they ought to sequester themselves every day and talk directly to God. Of course, we can talk naively to God in the manner of Tevye in Fiddler On the Roof. That procedure here I label "dumb hitbod'dut". Dumb hitbod'dut in that sense is in most cases better than no hitbod'dut at all. It can't hurt, and it might even be more useful than talking to oneself. But I am after bigger fish than that. My goal here is to begin to apply the principles of Likutei Moharan itself to the process of hitbod'dut. This introduction is not the place to spell out the complex principles of Likutei Moharan. You will find some of that in the sequel. Here I will just outline my basic assmptions for this project, which are that
(i) Since Neoplatonism and Hamann's philosophy of language are examples of dialectical thinking, therefore Likutei Moharan likewise is dialectical thinking.
